Case Summary
DIGITPOL, in cooperation with Politie Nederland, successfully tracked and located a stolen Dutch-registered Toyota in Limburg.
During the subsequent examination of the vehicle, investigators discovered that its identity had been altered.
The person in possession of the Toyota stated that the vehicle had been purchased in Germany. Further investigation supported the account that the purchase had taken place there. However, examination of the accompanying documentation identified another serious issue: the vehicle had been sold using counterfeit German documents.
The documents originated as blank German vehicle documents that had subsequently been fraudulently completed and used in connection with the sale of the stolen Toyota.
The case demonstrates how stolen vehicles can be given altered identities and supported by apparently convincing documentation before being introduced back into the legitimate vehicle market.
Vehicle Identity and Document Fraud
Vehicle trafficking does not always involve immediately exporting a stolen vehicle overseas. Organised vehicle crime can also involve altering identifying characteristics and using fraudulent registration or ownership documents to disguise a stolen vehicle's true identity.
A prospective buyer may therefore believe they are purchasing a legitimate vehicle, particularly when the vehicle is accompanied by documentation that appears authentic.
