Case Summary

DIGITPOL's Vehicle Crime Team successfully traced a stolen Citroën minibus that was discovered displaying false registration plates and a manipulated vehicle identity.

During the investigation, the registration and identity being used by the Citroën were found to correspond with another vehicle that had previously been damaged.

Working in cooperation with Stichting VbV, further investigation established that the vehicle was stolen and identified indications of insurance fraud and deliberate manipulation of vehicle identification numbers.

The investigation also identified suspected involvement by a mechanic in altering identifying information on the vehicle in an attempt to disguise its true identity.

Following the findings of the investigation, the Citroën was seized and the matter progressed as a police investigation.

Vehicle Identity Fraud & Forensic Identification

Stolen vehicles can be disguised using registration plates, documents or identifying information belonging to another legitimate vehicle. This form of vehicle identity fraud can make a stolen vehicle appear genuine during registration, insurance, resale or roadside checks.
